Builder’s license
The building & construction sector is Australia’s third-largest sector and employs approximately 9% of the country’s total workforce. The industry is continuously growing further with bright prospects and more and more professionals are eager to join the sector. The industry has doubled its growth over the past few years and the talent pool has increased to a considerable extent. As a norm in the industry, individuals who want to engage in the builders and construction sector in Australia should get a trade as per their state norms.
About the builder’s license

Every state and territory in the country has different criteria for businesses operating as per the license guidelines. Individuals who wish to obtain this license must fulfill these criteria.

To become a licensed builder, an individual must have:

  • Trade certificate (or equivalent diploma)
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant industry experience

The process can be lengthy, especially for individuals who are already working within the industry and have good exposure to the industry with experience and practical skills. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) offers a recognised and cost-effective way to a comparison with pursuing units of competency. It also fast-tracks the process of obtaining a builder’s license.

For every individual enrolling for training, RPL is proof of competency for acquired skills by completing the units given under each diploma or certification. It does not require any classroom attendance or exams. Individuals who do not possess experience can follow the standard procedure of obtaining their basic qualifications from an accredited institution, which will involve classroom study and practical experience in a workshop setup.

Why do you need a builder’s license?

Building and construction sector is the fastest-growing industry in the country while a builder’s license authorises the company identity as per the governing laws in a state. In the absence of a license, individuals violating state laws can be penalized or fined or may not be able to apply for a license in the future.

With a builder’s license, an entity can do the following:

  • Carry out building or construction work
  • Submit bids or quotes
  • Sign building contracts
  • Perform any building project work in individual capacity
How to apply for a builder’s license

The state or territory’s Building Commission regulates issuing of builder’s licenses in the country. The process differs from one state to another. Any individual, individual firm, or entity must have the following qualifications before applying for a builder’s license:

  • Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) CPC40110
  • Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) CPC50210

Additionally, an individual will be required to furnish proof of practical experience based on the duration an individual has worked in a relevant role, as well as the type of work performed. Builders with practical experience may have their experience, knowledge, and skills assessed in order to receive a qualification through RPL instead of having to complete the qualifications again.

How does the process work?
An individual with extensive experience in works associated with the building and construction sector without any formal qualification can go for RPL or effectively complete his full qualification based on his existing experience. There is no difference between the conventional building license process and obtaining it through Recognition of Prior Learning or RPL. RPL is ideal for individuals who have work experience and are looking for cost-effective ways to start their building and construction work.
